Adding your own front desk number

If you run a facility, a version with a blank space for your own front desk number, logo, or local police contact is genuinely useful. A resident who can walk twenty feet to ask a person is far better protected than one who has to call a national hotline.

We don't publish that file for open download. An editable copy still carrying this project's name is exactly the kind of thing someone could quietly alter and pass off as official, a real risk on a fraud-prevention site of all places. The card game

Scam or No Scam is a card game for practicing the moment itself. Each card is a made-up message: a call, a text, a knock at the door. Sixteen are scams and eight are real, and they're meant to be hard to tell apart, because in life they are. You say what you'd do, then turn the card over.

It works at a kitchen table with one person, over a few visits, or in a room with somebody running it. The guide explains both, including how to do it with your own parent without talking down to them.

• The cards, black and white. Twenty-six cards on thirteen sheets. Print two-sided, flipping on the long edge, then cut each sheet in half.
• The cards, in color. The same cards, if you have a color printer.
• The guide. Twenty-four pages. The first page is the whole method, if that's all you read.
• The numbers sheet. The real helpline numbers, kept on their own page so the cards never go out of date.

For sending to family

Short, ready-to-paste text messages and emails. Written to sound like a person, not a pamphlet, so you can send one to your mother without it feeling like a warning notice.

Printing notes

• Print the fridge sheet at full size. Do not shrink it to save paper. The type size is the feature.
• Black on white. Colored backgrounds cost readability and cost ink.
• Laminate the desk copy if it lives at a front desk.
• Wallet cards on card stock if you have it; ordinary paper is fine.

Copying and changing it

All of it is free to reuse, in any format, including under your own name. Translate it. Rewrite it. Cut it down. Put your logo on it. Licensed CC BY-NC: the one condition is a small credit line to the Trust But Verify Project somewhere reasonable. Printing and handing it out at a nursing home, assisted living community, or senior center is explicitly fine, even though those are businesses, that's exactly the use this is for.

The only other thing we'd ask (not a condition, just a request) is that if you change the advice itself, check it against the FBI and FTC guidance first, so nobody ends up with a refrigerator sheet that tells them something wrong.

Go ahead

You don't need our approval. Print what's useful, change what isn't, and hand it to whoever needs it.

Every sheet that ends up on a refrigerator is one more household where somebody hangs up and calls back. That's the whole thing.
